December 2008

May the Lord give you His peace!

In the early days of our community the friars wanted to choose a title of Our Lady as our special patroness. Our Lady of Guadalupe was an easy choice. Not only is she the Mother of all the Americas - especially the poor - she is also a patron of the pro-life movement and the new evangelization  (two causes dear to our charism). On his first apostolic trip abroad, Pope John Paul II entrusted his pontificate to her. So, every December 12th we have a huge celebration and renew our consecration to Jesus through Mary under her title of Guadalupe. You may find the text of our prayer here.

We were recently visited in the Bronx by the world's top Guadalupe expert, Fr. Eduardo Chavez. He was the postulator for the cause of canonization for Saint Juan Diego. Fr. Chavez' presentation was scholarly, hysterical and deeply moving. We wish that all of you were there. Evidently there is a website and DVD in production to provide accurate information concerning Guadalupe (stayed tuned).
More now than ever we feel confirmed in the importance of the Guadalupe apparitions and message. Fr. Chavez convincingly drew parallels between the Guadalupe era (mid 1500's) to our own post Vatican II era. Our Lady is leading us to a new evangelization in these modern times. She is with us as we strive to conquer our culture of death with the Gospel of Life and civilization of love. Below you will find some helpful links and two book recommendations. As you discern your vocation, ask Our Lady of Guadalupe to enwrap you in her holy mantle of protection...

Wisdom quote: "Am I not here? I who have the honor and privilege of being your mother?"

May the Lord bless you,
