The theme of the opening Mass at our recent parish mission in Indiana centered on the account of the Transfiguration. Jesus’ appearance (that is to say what he looked like) changed, revealing His divine glory. All week long we basked in the healing light of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Here His appearance is changed also. Here He radiates His glory. Like Peter, James, and John, we were all saying, “Lord, it is good to be here!” We experienced some really powerful graces. Thanks be to God.

After the Transfiguration, the apostles had to come down the mountain. Similarly, the brothers and I have come down the mountain, as we have returned back to the ordinary day-to-day. We are experiencing the post-retreat blahs! The extraordinary graces and consolations, often experienced on retreats, are given for the sake of strengthening us for the ordinary day-to-day carrying of the cross.

From the Catechism #568, “Christ’s Transfiguration aims at strengthening the apostles’ faith in anticipation of His Passion: the ascent onto the “high mountain” prepares for the ascent to Calvary.”

God bless you,
