Recently, while walking up the stairs at the friary, an interesting thought came to me. Many have compared the spiritual life to climbing a tall mountain. It is always easier to go down than to go up. Gravity is like fallen human nature. The only thing you must do to slip downhill is stop struggling to go uphill. There is no standing still in the spiritual life.
The shallower the stairs, the easier and longer the climb. The steeper the stairs, the harder and shorter the climb. Sometimes the stairs of life seem impossibly steep. Our Father wants to get us to the top of the mountain as soon as possible. Climb and don’t look back (you may get dizzy)! I hear that the view is so very beautiful at the top.
God bless you,
Fr. Luke Mary Fletcher, CFR
