August 10, 2005 Typically on Tuesdays, while Father Juniper, Brother Youssef, and Brother Honorat attend Spanish language class, Brother Matteo runs a catechetical program for boys at the friary. Carol from Missioners of Christ runs a parallel program for girls. We spent all day yesterday assisting the Missioners. In some ways, it was much like being with our kids in the Bronx. We felt right at home even while attempting to sing along in Spanish. Before the afternoon session began, we were able to visit a family that Rosann had gotten to know from previous visits. One of the little boys had just gotten home from school, and using a rock to write in the dirt, proudly showed us that he had learned how to write his numbers. It's little things like this that make it clear it's a different world down here. We found it so heartwarming to experience the joy and affection of these "poor" children. It makes you realize that there are many different types of poverty. "Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours." (Lk 6:20)
