Spiritual direction can be an important part of our struggle to grow in holiness. A good spiritual director offers objective feedback and allows for some healthy accountability. Because it is not always possible or practical for everyone to meet regularly with a spiritual director, let me offer a recommendation for an alternative.
A wise priest once advised me to always have a good book for spiritual reading. There are several books which offer great advice for growing in holiness. Don’t waste your precious time reading anything less than authentically solid soul-nourishing reading!
Regular reading and meditation on Sacred Scripture must be mentioned first. All Christians should be experts on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ found in the Four Gospels. Secondly, I would recommend “The Catechism of the Catholic Church”. The section on prayer is particularly helpful. Thirdly, I would recommend “Seeking Spiritual Direction” by Fr. Thomas Dubay, S.M. This book is a real goldmine for growing in your spiritual life. Lastly, I would recommend “Introduction to the Devout Life” by St. Francis de Sales (a Doctor of the Church & 3rd Order Franciscan). This last work is a spiritual classic.
If you prefer audio tapes, among others there are many helpful recordings about the spiritual life by our Father Benedict Groeschel and Father Andrew Apostoli.
God bless you; let us pray for each other,
Fr. Luke Mary Fletcher, CFR
