In the Gospel passages from Saint John, which we heard at daily Mass last week, we saw the mounting tension propelling us forward with Christ, toward His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. These readings place before us the confrontation between Jesus, Who speaks the truth, and those who oppose Him, who refuse to hear what He says.

His opponents question Jesus about Himself a number of times:

“Where is your father?” (Jn. 8:19)

“Who are you?” (Jn. 8:25)

“Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died?” (Jn. 8:53)

“Who do you make yourself out to be?” (Jn. 8:53)

This brings us to the heart of the matter: Who is Jesus? If we listen to His words, telling us that He is God, and if we accept them and accept Him, then we must change.

Those challenging Jesus are closed, hard-hearted, and do not want to change. Jesus responds: “Why do you not understand what I am saying? Because you cannot bear to hear my word.” (Jn 8:43)

During this holy season of Lent, we have been trying to repent, to change, to turn away from sin and to turn back to God. As we move into Holy Week, let us renew our efforts. Let us each look deep within our own heart and ask: Do I truly accept Jesus? Do I truly accept His words? Do they affect, penetrate, and shape every aspect of my life and conduct? Are there areas of my life where I need to let Jesus in, with His light and love? How do I still need to change?

Here are Jesus’ words to us:

“If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and truth will set you free… everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin… if a son frees you, then you will truly be free.” (Jn. 8:31-32, 34, 36)

Blessed Holy Week,
