The Trombone and Spirituality
I have found memories of growing up in Indiana. I remember learning to play the trombone. I think my parents remember the elephant-like noises with less nostalgia! However, by the time I was in high school I had become fairly proficient. I would love to hear all of the many instruments as we played beautiful music together. Each instrument had its part. The trombone is seldom the "star of the show", rather it plays a supporting role in orchestra music. Yet, every instrument is essential to the overall piece of music. If you have ever experienced a live orchestra concert, then you know the unforgettable wonder of its breathtaking beauty.
The famous theologian, Hans urs Von Balthasar, taught that the truth is symphonic. The whole of the Catholic faith forms a unified vision. Each aspect and article relates to the whole in a truly amazing synthesis. The revealed truth about the Trinity, Christ, the Church and humanity form a cogent unity.
The trombone on its own is not very appealing. Yet, the trombone in an orchestra adds a beautiful touch. The same is true for each one of us. We find our place, become most who we are, shine the brightest in the Church!
God bless you,
