Having just celebrated the First Sunday of Advent, we begin the new year in the liturgical calendar of the Church. Advent is a holy season full of rich meaning. Too bad it is the forgotten season! Christmas does not technically begin until Vespers (evening prayer) on Christmas Eve.
The traditions and liturgical readings during Advent focus our attention on the two comings of Christ. During the beginning of Advent, we meditate on the future coming of Jesus on the last day, at the end of time, when He will come in glory to judge the living and the dead. Towards the end of Advent, we call to mind the coming of Jesus two thousand years ago in His incarnation.
Besides the beautiful Advent hymns, my favorite thing about Advent is the readings during Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours. During this holy season we make a re-reading of many of the prophecies, found throughout the Old Testament, which are fulfilled in Jesus. It is truly amazing! I always find this a faith-building experience.
Advent is a time to “clean house” in order to spiritually prepare for the coming of our King. He is coming! May His coming find us awake and ready!
