The consequences of Christmas are many. One of Pope John Paul's favorites was articulated at Vatican II (Gaudium et Spes 22), "For, by His Incarnation, He, the Son of God, in a certain way united Himself with each man." Looking upon the Christmas crèche we realize that in Jesus, God has united Himself with us. He truly is Emmanuel, God-with-us!

If this is true, what are some of the consequences? There is another way of stating this same idea. God assumed our human nature; therefore, our human nature is good! His presence hallows all that we are, save sin. Contrary to a mistaken modern belief, Christianity is no enemy to authentic humanism. In Jesus Christ we discover what it is to be fully human, fully alive.

Every human person I meet (even the annoying ones!) contains His mysterious image and likeness. Therefore, I can show my love and gratitude to God by pouring it out on everyone I meet. Isn't this the true meaning of Christmas? of Christianity?

God bless you,
