I suppose everyone has their guardian angel stories. The one I’m about to share occurred in my college days after someone was telling me about all the times that her guardian angel had shown up. I walked away muttering a somewhat chiding prayer to my angel along the lines of “What have you done lately?”

The next day I was in the university bookstore looking for a booklet about celebrating Sundays for a friend in California. I couldn’t find it so I was walking away from the bookshelves when I heard a couple of books hit the floor behind me. I turned around, thinking how unusual it was for books to fall like that when nobody was there. As I bent down to pick them up I was shocked to find it was two copies of the book I had been looking for. I knew immediately who had intervened, so I thanked my guardian angel for showing up so quickly. I couldn’t stop smiling that day because of the greatly comforting realization that my heavenly friend was always at my side.

I was wondering if I should keep this favor to myself, but then I thought about how little we do for our angels compared to how much they do for us. They are always giving us assistance; we are always on the receiving end. At least we can honor them and thank them, which is what the Church reminds us to do on this feast day. So I’m happy today to publicly honor my angel (whom I simply call “Mister,” which is short for “mysterious”).

Undoubtedly the best gift we can give to our guardian angels is to strive for holiness, since they are more concerned about our spiritual well-being than our physical well-being. How sad it must be for them when they see us sinning and misusing the graces that have been given to us. This is another reason for us to run the race wholeheartedly, so that our invisible coaches who are running alongside of us can rejoice exceedingly with us when we reach the heavenly finish line, life on high in Christ Jesus.
