The Infinite Power of One Holy Communion
Just one Holy Communion well-received is worth the whole world, and can work every miracle.
I lovingly remember Blessed Miguel Augustine Pro, S.J., of Mexico (to name just one person), who for years evaded hostile authorities in order to provide the Sacraments to his beloved people.
“For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely, Christ Himself, our Pasch.” (CCC #1324)
Why is it, then, that we do not become saints more quickly if we have access to infinite grace? One answer may be that the graces we actually receive depend greatly on the quality of our disposition.
Key traits of a good Christian disposition in general, and especially when receiving Christ in Holy Communion, include: a childlike humility and simplicity, an authentic faith, and a pure intention.
As children of God, we are totally dependent on Him for everything. As Saint Thérèse and other saints remind us, God is our Father Who loves us all-sufficiently; we need to just let Him love us.
An authentic faith is one that takes Christ at His word. His word is unconditional love which demands unconditional love in return—for Him and for every member of His Mystical Body.
Purity of intention is willing one thing with all our heart. When we come to receive Jesus in Holy Communion today and every day, let us love Him with all our heart for Himself alone. Amen.
Br. Philip Maria Allen, CFR
