Don’t Dare Take My Cross Away

Years ago when I was young,

And foolish, not completely dumb,

When frightful things would come I’d say:

“Daddy, take my pain away!”

Then later on as I matured

And “reason” helped me to endure

I’d search to find a little rest:

“Excuse me, could you carry this?”

But now that I approach old age

Like Fath’r Groeschel, that grey-robed sage

When troubles come to me I say:

“Don’t dare take my cross away!”

For ev’ry cross bears grace disguised:

A lasting treasure—beyond all price;

And so with all my heart I pray:

“Don’t dare take my cross away!”
