Padre Pio Homeless Shelter
c/o 420 East 156th Street
Bronx, NY 10455
The Padre Pio Shelter is an eighteen bed facility for homeless men, operated by
the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. It has been open every night of the
year since Christmas 1987 and has been called the model homeless shelter for the
city.
Each night men arrive by bus around 7:30 pm and leave the following morning by bus around 6:15 am. Dinner is prepared for them by friars and volunteers; breakfast and a bag lunch are also provided. Further, clothing and toiletries are available. Some men have modest incomes so that they may save toward getting permanent rooms. Most men work but some are elderly or too ill. During their stay, the men are each assigned a chore, they can relax, watch wholesome and inspiring videos, and are also free to pray in the Chapel where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved. An optional prayer service is held each night. The friars take turns working at the shelter, with two brothers on duty each night.
The Friars are assisted in this work by the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal
and by volunteers.
