XXI   WALKING   PILGRIMAGE

From    Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Great Meadows, NJ to

Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine, Doylestown, PA

AUGUST   7th  TO  AUGUST  10th , 2008

 

The XXI Walking Pilgrimage will begin here at Ss. Peter & Paul Church, Great Meadows, NJ on August 7th at 6 am.  During the Pilgrimage we will have many priests with us including some as far away as Poland.  The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (Bronx, NY) will lead the spiritual program for the English-speaking group.  The closing event of the Walking Pilgrimage will be the Holy Mass celebrated on
August 10th at 2:00 pm at Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine in Doylestown, PA.

It is possible to join the Pilgrimage on any day of the journey.  If you are joining us on August 7th or 8th, please come to Ss. Peter & Paul Church in Great Meadows, NJ.  From here you will be transported to the pilgrims who are already walking on the trail.  If you are arriving on August 9th or 10th, please drive directly to the Czestochowa Shrine in Doylestown, PA, where on Saturday at 7 am OR 7 pm you will be picked up by a vehicle with a banner reading “Pilgrims Service”.  This vehicle will be parked by the War Veteran Cemetery; it will bring you back to where the walkers are currently walking.  On Sunday, August 10th, please drive directly to the Czestochowa Shrine in Doylestown, PA, where at 7 am only, you will be picked up by a vehicle with a banner reading “Pilgrims Service”.  This vehicle will be parked by the War Veteran Cemetery; it will bring you back to where the walkers are currently walking.  Transportation to the above sites and the return home is the responsibility of the participants. Cars are not allowed to follow the Pilgrimage.  During a break in the pilgrimage, our van will transport you back to Great Meadows where you can drive your car, escorted by the van, to Doylestown, park your car, and hop back into the van that will take you back to the pilgrimage.  In this way your car will be at the finish so you may go home directly from Doylestown, PA.

ONE OF THE OLDEST FORMS OF PRAYER IS THE WALKING PILGRIMAGES TO THE VARIOUS SHINES OF EUROPE.

HERE IN THE UNITED STATES THIS TRADITION IS RELIVED.

 

* Four days of prayer, meditation, and song

* Daily Eucharistic celebration

* Opportunity for confession and counseling

* In fraternal spirit, young and old, in rain or shine, walking through hills, forests, meadows, by creeks, trails and country roads, sometimes with minor physical inconveniences, but always with high spirits.


What  to  take with  you  on  the Pilgrimage:

         The Holy Bible, prayer book and rosary, tent, camping mattress, sleeping bag, raincoat, two pairs of good shoes, appropriate clothing (3 sets), several socks (about 2 pair per day), some dry food, some first aid items such as powder, elastic bandages, muscular pain relief, cream for poison ivy, oak, and bugs, dry and wet tissues ,towel, toothbrush, small washbowl, personal hygiene items, sore throat lozenges, etc.

            Short shorts, short skirts, or swimming suites are not allowed.

***People who play guitars or other musical instruments are asked to bring them along on the journey.

At registration time please have your card filled out with the following information:

                        5. Make/Model/Color/License Plate # of your Vehicle

                        6. Parish name

                        7. Any health issues/problems?

Children and youth registering for the pilgrimage without parents will have to identify someonemaking the journey with them as the person responsible for them during the pilgrimage. ***Please register for videotaping permits.

Overnight sleeping in “big tens” involves an extra fee:

                        * for  3 nights    $30

                        * for  1 night     $15

The fees are necessary to cover costs of food, drinks, luggage, transportation, portable toilets, overnight stay site fees, insurance, medical first-aid, loud speakers, etc.

 

R   U   L  E  S

1.  Pilgrimage - a four-day retreat lived in prayer, kindness, brotherly love, help, and discipline.

2.  The Pilgrimage (walk) will start with a large hand-carried wooden Cross, followed by Marian  Pilgrimage Emblems, and then the Pilgrims (walkers) will follow.

3.  The Pilgrimage will be divided into groups - everyone should stay with his/her group.

4.  Teenagers under age 18 years old should have written parents permission for participation in the  pilgrimage.  If parents are not present an adult guardian must accompany the youth.

5.  Children should stay under the care of the parents or guardians.

6.  There should be silence 30 minutes after evening Mass until morning at the campsite.

7.  Pilgrims with health problems should declare them during the registration.

8.  During the pilgrimage it is prohibited to smoke or use alcohol beverages or drugs.

9.  Dress should be appropriate to the religious character of the Pilgrimage (beach dress, short skirts, short shorts, bathing suits, etc. are not allowed).

10. The Pilgrimage can only be accompanied by the “cars of service”.  For safety issues no other cars will be allowed to follow.  (This also means no cars are allowed to stop by the walking pilgrims).

11. Setting up and taking down of individual tents is the responsibility of the tent owners.

12. Places of stop (breaks), sleeping areas, and all the areas along the Pilgrimage route must remain clean.  Please place your trash in containers designated for trash.

13. Video taping of the Pilgrimage is free of charge but you must obtain a video permit before the  start of the Pilgrimage.

14. All rules, obedience to the directors and servers of the pilgrimage, and respect for directions must be obeyed for the safety of all.

15. Pilgrims who do not follow the rules will be dismissed from the Pilgrimage.

16. Each pilgrim is asked to keep all sources of safety on the road, at all resting places, and at all campsites.

17. The Organizers have the right to make decisions in cases not covered by the rules.

 

DIRECTIONS   TO   GREAT MEADOWS, NJ.

From Bronx - to George Washington Bridge to H-Way 80 W. exit 19, left to Hackettstown, 1st light turn right on Rt. 46 W. - about 5 miles - Ss. Peter & Paul Church(red bricked) is on your right.

From Brooklyn - to Holland Tunnel or Verrazano Bridge, to 78 W, take exit 17 - Rt. 31 North to Rt. 46 East - Ss. Peter & Peter Church (red bricked) is on your left.

 

People who have their own tents are required to set them up in the evening and take them down in the morning the following day.  The Pilgrimage service people will not be responsible for pitching private tents or packing them up.
