- Why do you wear gray robes?
Gray is the original color of the franciscan habit (undyed wool).

- What do the letters CFR, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal abbreviation stand for?
The Community of Franciscans of the Renewal.

- How do I make a donation?
The best way to make a donation is by check. You may send a donation to any of our friaries, make it out to "Franciscan Friars of the Renewal" We are able to receive donations in any currency (Dollars, Pounds, Euro, etc.)

- How long is your postulancy / novitiate / rest of formation process?
Typically, the postulancy is 6 months and the novitiate is 1 year. After the novitiate the newly-professed live for at least one year as a brother in one of our friaries. Seminary studies follow at some point for those called to the priesthood. One is usually a friar for around 5 years before professing perpetual vows (for life). [ more...]

- I was wondering what kind of education is required/expected from those seeking to join your order?

Usually, the men joining us have at a 4-year college degree (Philosophy preferred). This is especially helpful for those who feel called to be priests. The Vatican and the United States Bishop's Conference have set forth guidelines for "Pre-Theology" (college level seminary) requirements. The Church wants candidates for the Priesthood to study Philosophy before formally studying Theology at the Major Seminary. We recommend studying at any Catholic institution known for academic excellence, vibrant spirituality and orthodoxy.

After the first 3 years of Franciscan formation, those who have a 4-year degree - yet little to no philosophy - we send to the Minor Seminary program of the Archdiocese of New York, presently a two year program.

Almost all of our friars study for the Priesthood at St. Joseph Seminary, Dunwoodie (Yonkers), the seminary for the Archdiocese of New York. Our seminarians live at St. Leopold Friary, 2 miles from the seminary.
